The purpose of writing an argumentative essay^1,2

The point of an argumentative essay is to present an argument in favour of a particular point of view and convince the reader of that same point of view. As a writer, you will need to use fact-based evidence and logic to prove your point and convince the reader of its validity.

Structuring an argumentative essay^1,2

• Introduce the problem and your perspective (introduction). Start with an introduction paragraph that sets up the rest of the essay, by introducing the issue you’ll be discussing, and a brief description of your point of view (i.e., your thesis).

 

• Explain your perspective and present your evidence (body). In the body of your essay, present your argument and the evidence behind it. Discuss the opposing arguments and present the evidence that makes you refute or reject them. Each paragraph of the body should focus on one topic (such as showcasing one piece of evidence).

 

Note: You will need to support any claims you make using credible research, statistics and studies.

 

• Sum up your argument (conclusion). End the essay with a final conclusion paragraph, where you summarise and re-enforce your thesis in light of the evidence you have presented to the reader.

 

Different types of argumentative essays

There are different argumentative essay formats you can use, depending on the type of issues you’re writing about:^1-2

 

• Classic/ Aristotelian: Presents a straightforward argument.

 

• Rogerian: Takes a “middle ground” approach, presenting both sides of an argument as valid.

 

• Toulmin: Unpacks more complex issues and/or provides a rebuttal that disproves an opposing point of view.

Tips for writing your thesis

Your one-sentence thesis statement is the cornerstone of your whole essay, so it’s important that you make a clear, strong argument from the very start. There are a few different ways you can open your essay with a compelling thesis.²

 

1. Present the topic as a question, and your viewpoint as the answer. (The question can also be the title of your essay.)
2. Present an opposing viewpoint, and immediately state why you disagree with it.
3. Present your main point and outline how you plan to back it up.

 

Any of these options will help you to get your point across quickly and clearly and prepare the reader for what to expect from the rest of your essay.

 

Different types of arguments

You can back up your thesis using a variety of arguments, such as:²

 

• Cause and effect: What causes the problem you’re presenting, and what type of effect does it have?

 

• Definition: What is the dictionary definition of the argument you’re making (and how do you interpret that definition)?

 

• Fact: Is a particular statement true or false, and what evidence supports this?

 

• Policy: Why should the reader care about the argument, and/or what action should they take after reading the essay?

 

• Value: Why is the issue important?
